    First of all: Nothing in the error message text is correct. You can log in into messenger as long as you use the tray icon to log in. If somebody is calling you, you can chat with the calling person without any problems. But never open the messenger main window. You will get the error and messenger logs you out. I used messenger (same version, same account) on another computer in the same local network and everything worked fine. I know about one difference: shared folders are bound to a individual computers, thus the propability is very high that the error corresponds to shared folders. As soon as I know more I will post the new information here.

    I was continuing working on the problem. In case you log in under another account name in windows (no administrator rights!) the problem does not exist any more. In case the account has administrator rights you get the usual error.
    If you do not have a user without administrator rights you must create one. Under your own account, use the command line program "runas" to start messenger under another account. This is only a workaround and not a solution but it works.

    I will continue to search for a solution of the problem and I will post it here.

    add these 2 lines to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file and you ll be able to sign in
    65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
    65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.skadns.net

    you can use notepad, edit, or any simple word text

    damm this problem i tried installed 8.5 abd 8.1 it wont let me sign in some MSN accounts it says some time it says unable to sign in Massenger some times it says it cannot get contact list so this is sucks servers i dont know how to solve it i tried alot my friends have same problem in 3 PC's MSN not working and on another 2 PC's it working good lol

    Finally, as a workaround for the time being, you can use the updated version of MSN Messenger
    7.0.

    To do so, download from here:

    Then you'll need to engage compatibility mode so it doesn't force you to upgrade. To do so,
    go to the \Program files\MSN Messenger folder, right click on the msnmsgr.exe file, choose
    Properties, then the Compatibility tab, choose Windows 2000, click OK and then run Messenger
    as per normal.

    65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net and 65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.co.uk files to the "hosts msn file" and now it works

    San, the reason it won't let you save the file is because it is set to read-only. just right-click the hosts file, choose Properties, and un-check the read-only box and click OK

    edit the hosts file again and it now should save fine

    by the way, i tried everything here and i haven't gotten anywhere.

    I have same problem! But problem is not localized on one computer. When I try to log on Win Live Msngr, on any computer I get this Error!!! In addition for this I can log on Windows Live Page with this Credentials!?!?!?!?!?!

    tried most fix..the registering of dll...but halfway have error
    downgraded my live messenger from 8.5 to 8.1
    still same problem
    this is a new vista notebook
    my vista pc is ok with live messenger 8.1
    my xp messenger is ok.
    something is wrong?

    same here, can log on 1 hotmail address, but not mine not my sons, yet downstairs on same internet connection different pc can log on to all. both pcs have same win xp and messenger.

    having the same problems again...i had this problem before and was able o solve it by opening ports that my windows firewall blocked. now, it is freaking useless...i was able to log on a few minutes ago and was working perfectly. Then i had to buy my lunch and came back it wouldn't like to sign in....what a bullshit program.

    Guys!! This seems to be a mass service disruption that is server related. It is happening all over (feb 6th 2008). I'm from New Zealand experiencing the same issue here amongst many others.


    I think Microsoft should own up and acknowledge this issue.

    I reformatted and since than have had the error come up 81000378...I can access my email via hotmail.com and I can even access msn on another computer with my address.
    If I right click on the icon at the bottom right of screen, it "logs in" and pop up about emails comes but when I try to open up msn to my screen, it goes to error.
    First thing was with Xp, min version is 7.5, well, I like to be totally updated so I have the latest version so that wasn't the problem.
    Than,I Started Internet Explorer.
    • On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the Advanced tab.
    • In the Security section, make sure that the following check boxes are set correctly:
    o Clear the Check for server certificate revocation check box.
    o Select the Use SSL 2.0 check box.
    o Select the Use SSL 3.0 check box
    • Click OK to close the window. That didn't solve it.

    For Windows XP click on START, select RUN and type in each command below one at a time and click the OK button. After each command is executed successfully, you will receive a "DllRegisterServer succeeded" message. Wait until you receive this message before you run the next command.
    • REGSVR32 softpub.dll
    • REGSVR32 wintrust.dll
    • REGSVR32 initpki.dll
    • REGSVR32 Rsaenh.dll
    • REGSVR32 Mssip32.dll
    • REGSVR32 Cryptdlg.dll
    • REGSVR32 Dssenh.dll
    • REGSVR32 Gpkcsp.dll
    • REGSVR32 Slbcsp.dll
    • REGSVR32 Sccbase.dll

    That didn't solve it.

    Open windows host file with Notepad: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\ho­sts

    Add these 2 lines to the bottom:

    65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
    65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net

    Save it and restart msn

    That didn't solve it.

    Uninstalled twice and nothing. Have set it to forget me and that didn't do anything.

    I uninstalled in and installed 7.0 but it said to continue I must install latest one...so that didn't help.

    I am able to sign into Windows Messenger so might just use that for now.

    I have tried every single thing I've found so far but nothing has worked. I have got more searching to do so I wil post if I find answer.

    Definitely a generalised problem which started today. I am in Poland and my Sister first called me from Scotland cause she got it. After I logged out msn to check her account the same problem hit mine. Tried all recommendations I found on web.
    Keeping a close eye on this page now to see if someone finds or hears of the solution.
    We'll get there .... let's be positive.

    but can login with the MSN Web Messenger though.

    it doesnt work on three different machines on two different ISPs.

    This is so damn annoying! I've spent 3 hours trying to fix it, i used up every single solution from Google and NO HOPE. I'm glad there are others like me (not sadistic, just relieved its not my computer problem) Hope someone at MS gets it into their brains to stop adding new premium features and make sure BASIC features work!

    The same problem in Italy. I checked the online version of MSN and it was working fine. I tried to reinstall MSN without success. So if there is good enough solution how to delete the local data from the old MSN installation and then install the latest version, I am sure MSN will work again.

    I am having the same problem in Canada - even bought a program that was advertised here to fix the registry problem but was to no avail. I hate this shit.

    yeah from London Hmm.. it could be the new msn (windows live plus!)
    that has a bug but the same problem happened when i had windows live (which i've had for ages and was working fine up until today) i thought it was because i hadnt installed the windows live plus msn and still doesnt work
    i think its just a bug in the whole system
    windows messenger works but the its windows messenger
    its alot different?

    I just can say that is problem in MS servers (maybe because they servers running win Server 2K8 :-) or Chinese New Year I dont now, bat this is not work)

    Problem is reported by my colegue. Before I start resolving this both My accounts is work (one hotmail, one on my company domen). Since I start to work on problem, one of my account (hotmail) star to report that error. Bizare, meand on my computer do not work two accounts (hotmail, and company domen) but one accout work (other company domen)!?!?!?!?!?!

    I try anything I find on google, and nothing gona to do result!

    After that I try to log on web messenger (http://webmessenger.msn.com/) ant this works!

    But, I try and Windows messenger (simply boring messenger that been installerd with Windows).
    And this work too... And this is temporary solution...

    The problem appears to be with the MS side, not the client, as far as I can tell.

    I can't log in on any computer, but my colleague can log in to his MSN on his computer, yet gets the error on mine, so I suspect those without the problem may just have their contacts cached - and those of us who need the contacts refreshing are getting the error.

    I think with all these people having the problem today, that we'll just have to wait for MS to fix it.

    Problem here too, in Hungary. I've been trying to fix it for hours now. I've tried several solutions, as well as this one, cleaning contact cache, uninstall/reinstall, system restore, firewall off, but nothing helped. The only method that I found useful is to downgrade Live to MSN 7.5. This works for me now:

    1. uninstall Windows Live Messenger
    2. Download MSN 7.5
    3. Install MSN 7.5
    4. If it tells you to 'Upgrade to a newer version', just right click/Properties to the shortcut on desktop, and check Windows 2000 compatibilty, or you can download a patch here:

    Jess, are you getting the same error message, or something else is the problem? This really worked for me. I just tried to update to Live version 9, but I get 8100378 again. MS did something very 'big' :-P

    I think they are refreshing user accounts one portion at a time... some people as you can see can already login, meanwhile comment #22 abt downloading the msn 7.0 special client works.

    Hey guys! I had the same silly problem like you all too. To solve 'Error code: 81000378' problem would be as bellow:

    go to / open-->

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts.msn

    and put in these 2 lines (at the end/bottom of the file)

    # 65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
    # 65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net

    Well, my problem started about 8 hours ago. One messenger account works, but the other does not.....hey just tested for just one last time and now, suddenly it works!!!

    Hi, just sorted this problem with my account.

    1) Sign in online via IE and then go to options
    2) In Account settings change your email account password and then sign out.
    3) Now try and access your account normally

    Hope this works for you too.

    This error has fixed itself on my computer as well. However I did download more windows live and went to temporary windows one step, downloaded, and installed... funny though, I am suppose to buy windows one step from microsoft.

    Interesting - one step took off norton.

    had this problem yesterday tried everything then it fixed its self - guys MSN is a excellant way to communicate across the world - and yes when something goes wrong it is frustrating - but that does not excuse the bad language or stupid comments - a lot of hard work goes into producing these systems - so maybe the occasional thanks would be more appropriate

    Hi All, i resolved my one, i was having the same issue, i contacted Microsoft Messenger, but nothing happened, then i tried these things,

    bcoz i am in domain envourement i have disjoint my computer from domian, and then rejoined it in domain again, first i signed in with out proxy, it worked, then i put the proxy i mean my Company proxy, again it worked, now i am happy its working for me. i suggest you all who are using proxy and domain, rejoin your computer and test it i am sure it will work. have a good day you all....

    Dude.. Every times i login in msn it gives new error
    some times 81000306 some time 8004820 :s ... Strange type of errors every time.. i tried every way.. registering files... uninstalling firewalls and Anti-viruses... and also your way But now work.. :) and the same thing i did .. just run C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe [it login In 30 Sec]

    I've found away to use 7.5 without any complications....just go to compatibility mode and change it to windows2000. (C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger)...right mouse on the msnmsgr.exe and go to properties.....then choose the tab compatibility......Select "run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows200"!!
    Its a work around so I don't know what exactly will and will not work but you will beable to use msn!!!
    AND maybe this will work also with the later version too?!?!??! 8.0....etc etc

    GOOD LUCK!! And all the other solutions I've read didn't work for me either :P

    IT WORKS...


    Open windows host file with Notepad: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\ho­sts

    Add these 2 lines to the bottom:

    65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
    65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net

    Save it and restart msn

    TRUST ME IT WORKS ON ME... try this... :)

    guys, for those of you who are still facing this annoying problem, its probably because somehow u blocked ur messenger from connecting to the internet via special files such as wlcomm.exe and logagent.exe.

    So check that ur firewall didnt block these by goin through its network security settings.

    Hope this helped. Surely it will because it happened to me and I fixed it! :D
