  • eric · 3 years ago
I was having troubles as of this evening tuesday sept 12 2006. Used this trick and it worked. The time this was published I did have some problems but MSN Live messenger was still working and worked all afternoon.

Thanks to whoever found this tip
  • Ariel · 3 years ago
Hi thanks a lot of the tip. Quick question, what is the reason for "Please do remember to remove these lines when the msn service gets back to normal."

my msn was saying the service was running okey but i was getting this error for the past 5 hours. How can i check then wether or not i can delete this lines?
  • Merle · 3 years ago
Well, nice trick, but it's not working for me and it's a very inopportune moment for me to have no msn.

Anyone have any other bright ideas to get the damn thing working?

  • Kat · 2 years ago
    Thanks that worked! thanks heaps.
  • Knut · 2 years ago
It is easier and works most times just to run the commandline:

    ipconfig /flushdns

In that way a new ip is found for thoose two names, and normally it is a working one comming up.

And an added bonus, you dont have to fix the fix.

I tried the regedit.exe but under the directory MSNMessenger there is no "Policies". Mine still doesn't work.

    65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
    65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net
    worked for me
  • SJR · 2 years ago
Open windows host file with Notepad: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

Add these 2 lines to the bottom:

    65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
    65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net

    Save it and restart msn

Please do remember to remove these lines when the msn service gets back to normal.

I tried this method to get rid of that damned erro and it does not work. I repeat. IT DOES NOT WORK FOR ME!!! I am a big fan of MSN messenger but this so called "update" ruins what was otherwise a great product. What is even more unnerving is that MSN doesn't seem to be interested or invested in taking care of it. Why the hell release somethign that is so full of bugs and then have the audacity to prevent clients from rolling back to the previous version that worked perfectly well?

I have tried just about everything I can find. This fix didnt work either I have the error code 80040154 with Vista and the 2009 version of messenger. I have now spent 2 days trying to fix this. I dont have a uninstal in add remove programs I cant instal an older version of messenger. The web instal of messenger sits on 0% and says it is registeering with windows update. What can I do?
  • Maria · 11 months ago
I've had this problem on and off for 3 months now, it's driving me nuts!!!!!

This solution didn't work for me :(

Live Messenger works for a few days, then it stops. MSN claim "all systems are stable and running". I can also sign in using webmessenger, so I know it's not a problem with my account.

The problem just seems to come and go of its own accord without any intervention on my part, I haven't changed any settings (including firewall settings) or anything, I can't see any logic in it!!

Somebody out there PLEASE PLEASE help!! I emigrated to NZ recently and messenger is so important to keep in touch with friends and family back home.... I'm starting to feel lonely :( Maybe I should go out and make new friends lol
